Pattern Fitting

23 Nov

If you have been following my blog for any length of time you know I like Nancy Zieman. (Sewing with Nancy)  One of my major sewing problems is getting a pattern to fit.  On Nancy’s latest show “Solving the Pattern Fitting Puzzle” she gives some great tips.  This is the first part of two and I have already learned some simple tips that I can put to use.  I hope this helps you too.

Acts of Kindness

9 Dec

I am tired of hearing all the things that are wrong in the world so I started a campaign on my Facebook page to post acts of kindness.  Maybe you will join in and add acts of kindness to your Facebook page for the month of December.  Maybe we can make a difference.  Here is my post for today.

Acts of Kindness:
Sewing with Nancy has been a favorite show of mine for a long time. At the end of her show she does a segment call Nancy’s Corner, during that time she interviews people who are making a difference with their sewing talents. A few are teaching women in third world countries how to sew and make a living, making pillowcase and giving them to children in hospitals to brighten their day, hats for people who have lost their hair due to chemo, dress for girls in Africa and the list goes on. Thank you Nancy Zieman for bringing this to our attention.

Zippers

26 Sep

Does the thought of sewing in a zipper scare you?  I am surprised by how many people avoid this task.  Here are three different tutorials on how to sew in a basic zipper.  They all approach it in a similar manner, but with a few different touches and points.  See which one you like the best and give it a try.  They all machine baste their seams, I hand baste, makes it easier for me to pull the thread back out.

Quilt As You Go

13 Sep

Many years ago I signed up for a class to make a quilt as you go quilt.  I didn’t read the fine print and this quilt took a lot of hand stitching.  I don’t like hand stitching.  It took a very long time to finish.  Fast forward to this week when watching Sewing With Nancy and about half way into the show they showed a quilt as you go method that requires no hand sewing.  So I sat down at my sewing machine and finished this baby quilt in one afternoon.  I am very happy with the results.  Of course you can add more detail to the squares, but I just wanted something quick.  I about got booed out of the house as everyone here are Seahawk fans, but the baby’s family are die-hard Bronco fans, so it works.  I brought the backing fabric around the edges and finished it the same way I put the squares together. I mitered the corners simply by folding and pressing.

Here is where I got information on how to make this quilt.

You can’t see the quilting in this picture, but about 13.30 minutes into the show there is a quick tutorial on quilt as you go.

Totes and Bags

6 Sep

I love the large blue Ikea bags.  We don’t live very close to Ikea so when I do get there I stock up. I use them the most often when we travel or go camping.  When I saw this fun design and the pretty fabric ….well I guess you could say they had me at hello.  You can find the tutorial for the bag at Miss Make.
I also like these decor tote boxes that Nancy Zieman had on her show this week.  The construction is very similar to the bag construction.  There is a video of the show if you follow this link.

Shirt to Hobo Tote

18 Jan

I love this tote.  I think there are a few company shirts hanging in my husband’s side of the closet he wouldn’t mind giving to a good cause.  I watch Nancy Zieman on a regular basis.  She has great sewing tips.  And I get to see her in person at the end of February, so excited (or should I say SEW excited?).  Go to Nancy’s blog to get the tutorial for this great tote.IMG_0040-imp
