When introducing word chunks “at” is a great on to start with. I find most of the students can sound it out and recognize a lot of the words we learn.
Words in this group include: bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, vat, that.
I start the class by discussing our new word chunk, sound it out, see how many words we can make. Have them write them down. I would also have a hand out sheet with the words and a blank line so they can practice writing the words. Then I would read a book with one of the words in the story. A class favorite is “Pete the Cat” by by Eric Litwin and James Dean. There are web links that have some great ideas and hand outs to go with “Pete the Cat” books.

Then we do a craft to fit the days word chunk. Here are a couple I am considering.
We would do a little practice on our penmanship, which is a right brain activity. Doing the craft before helps to get the brain thinking that way.
As the group only meets once a week I send out an email to parents on what to work on during the week.
